Freedom of Information Act 2000 - How are we Doing?
In this section you will find information on casualty reduction and public attitude towards safety cameras and road safety.
Casualty Reduction
The Department for Transport's Road Safety Strategy sets out national targets for reduction of casualties in road traffic collisions by 2010, compared to the average for 1994-98 of:
-
a 40% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents;
-
a 50% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured; and
-
a 10% reduction in the slight casualty rate, expressed as the number of people slightly injured per 100 million vehicle kilometres.
In addition to the national targets, the highways authorities of the West Midlands have set further targets, aiming to achieve by 2010:
-
a 30% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured in road accidents from 2004 to 2010;
-
a 35% reduction in the number of children killed or seriously injured between the 2002-2004 average and the 2008-2010 average; and
-
a 10% reduction in slight casualties from 2004 to 2010.
The West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme is committed to helping our partners to work towards achieving these targets.
For more information on progress towards targets within the West Midlands, see the West Midlands Local Transport Plan. For more information on the national progress towards these targets, see the Second Review of the Government's Road Safety Strategy.

Public Attitude Surveys
West Midlands Casualty Reduction Scheme have commissioned two surveys to gauge public opinion about safety cameras. As part of the Midlands Safety Camera Partnerships group, we also commissioned a report into driver behaviour and attitude to speeding.
